Generation of electrical energy and balancing them according to national priorities and regional needs has been the prime objective of TTPS. India being a poor country needs energy at a cheaper rte and a balance has to be struck between economy and reliability.
The generation of energy has been to go hand in hand with the activities that lead to harmonious social growth compatible to the environment of the nation or the region.
The Tenughat Thermal Power Station is situated near Tenughat Dam in the district of Bokaro. The nearest railway station is Gomia, which is about 22 Kms from the site. The project is also connected by road from Ramgarh and Gomia. The project was sanctioned for 3 stages, as stage-I of 2x210 MW and stage –III of 1x500 MW Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited was created as a separate company (Company’s Act 1956) in 1987. This unit is under commercial operation since September 1997. The firs unit has been running satisfactorily and operating at 40% PLF and oil consumption has been reduced to lower than the all India average of 1.9 ml/KW.
1877 acres of land was acquired for stage I on which stands the main powerhouse, ash disposal area, colonies and railway sidings. This land is insufficient for the expansion project under stage II expect for the ash disposal area for which additional land the tune of 250 acres is being acquired.
Techno-economic clearance from Central Electricity Authority has already been taken for commission of stage II of Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited. It consists of 3x210 MW units of coal fired Thermal Power Plant
Subsequent environmental clearance for this project has already been taken from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, vide ref letter no.J-13011/857/86-1A dated 20.30.2002.
And aviation clearance from National Airports Authority for 275 heights multi-fuel chimney for 3x210 MW TTPS has been taken clearance from Civil Aviation Dept., Govt. of India, vide ref letter no.AA1/20012/98/87-ARI.
No objection certificate (NOC) from the Bihar State Pollution Control Board , Patna for construction of 3x210 MW units. TTPS has been taken vide ref. Memo No.4049, Patna dated 28.12.1986.
MOM regarding availability of water from Tenughat reservoir has already been finalized. MOM short –term linkage committee for coal supply to TVNL has already been finalized.
This power station is already connected to the grids at Bihar Shariff and Patratu through a 400 KV Transmission line. Presently there is a provision to evacuate power from TTPS by the following 200 KV/400 KV line to Chandil at Garhwa. Power generated by TTPS will first meet the requirement of the State of Jharkhand and the surplus will be sold to the neighboring State of Bihar. If so required, power will be sold to the other States through power trading corporation, New Delhi. The Hon’ble Chief Minster of Jharkhand under the leadership of Energy Minister inaugurated the Stage-II project of Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited on 22.10.2001. The first unit of extension stage-II is expected to be commissioned in 36 to 40 month’s time.
Keeping in view the availability of abundance source of water and coal from the adjacent coal mines, the Government of Bihar commissioned the Tenughat Thermal Power Project.
The project envisages the production of approximately 1550 MW of electricity in three phases. The first phase is of 210 MW of tow units have been compelled, the second phase is of 210 MW of 3 units is on-going, the third phase is of 500 MW of 1 units has to be taken in the 11th plan.
The Government of India granted the permission for the first phase in 1979. The first phase of the work was accomplished in 1995 with a total capital investment of Rs.915 crores. This Thermal Power station was dedicated to the nation on 9th December, 1995 by the then Chief Minister of Bihar. But due to some technical snags the first phase came to a stand still on February 5, 1996.
Unit II was synchronized in the year of 1996. It was put under commercial operational from Oct 1997 and was producing electricity of 210 MW continuously producing electricity according to its capacity.
